I used to love my fair skin. I’d show it proudly. Pale used to be attractive at one point in time…
After living in the Caribbean, I can’t go back to pale. I have a TON of makeup that’s for a darker skin color. I didn’t want to go tanning at a salon, I just wanted some additional color for when I’m feeling a little too white. Enter Banana Boat Self-Tanning Lotion. When I was a teenager, I tried the Neutrogena Build-A-Tan, and it was never dark enough for me to notice a difference so I never used it. I went with the Banana Boat Summer Color Self-Tanning Lotion with “Deep Dark Color” on the front.
The bottle is not travel friendly, you’d have to put it in a checked bag. If you’re going to a place with a beach, no need to bring it though! A lot of words on the packaging, “Self Adjusting Color for a Natural Tan” and “Streak Free” are the promises. A big one, and one that I like is “For All Skin Tones.” The fairest skinned girls can use this to the girls with a deeper skin tone. The directions on the back are simple. Apply to clean skin, wash hands after use, let it dry, then wait until your color appears. The cost is anywhere from $6 to $8 at your local drugstore/superstore.
The formula is thick. Goopy, if you will. The lotion is oil-free, and has some Vitamin E and Aloe Vera to nourish your skin. The lotion doesn’t run, which gives you the full control of where it will go. The color is also very dark, and not orange! It also has a scent. It’s a sweet smelling suncreen scent. Sorry for the alliteration. I personally don’t mind the scent at all. Some of those other self-tanners smell like some kind of car oil, this one doesn’t at all. This lotion also has NO SPF! None! Apply your sunscreen as you would any other day.
Now for the application.
Make sure your skin is clean. If you have dry skin with some rough patches, exfoliate! Just like we put a primer on our face to create a smooth canvas for our makeup, do the same when you’re applying a self-tanner. It’s not the formula’s fault if it gets into a patch of skin! Don’t shave immediately before! The lotion could irritate you. For me, it didn’t. Everyone’s skin is different! You know yours better than I do.
Around the knees, elbows, ankles, and and hairline, be careful. Use a small amount. The lotion could settle into those lines, and no one wants a super dark elbow. Some people use a lotion on these areas before applying the self-tanner, but I’ve had no issues thus far. I am also super careful on my face, too. I don’t use too much, and I watch myself as I do it. A dark spot on my knee is fine compared to a dark spot on the middle of my cheek!
Apply the lotion all over! Anywhere you want. Be sure to rub it all in. Make sure not to apply too heavily, it could leave a darker spot. You can see as you’re applying where the lotion is going. It’s a tinted formula, which is nice for application. You won’t miss a spot, and you won’t go over a spot that already has a bronze hue. If you want to use gloves, go ahead. The formula can tan your palms. I tend to wash my hands after rubbing the lotion on a body part. Right leg, wash hands. Left leg, wash hands. I found if I wait until the end, a couple hours later I notice a tanned palm. Kinda weird!
After you apply the lotion, just hang out! Wait until the lotion dries before you put on clothes, and don’t put on anything that’s too tight. Wear some loose fitting clothes, like a shirt you’d never be seen in public wearing. Mine is a giant lime green King Pig from “Angry Birds.” It’s ridiculously large (a funny gift for my fiance’s birthday a couple years ago). You’ll notice throughout the day the color setting. If you do this before bed, by morning you’ll have a beautiful “sun” kissed tan.
Don’t apply again immediately if you want darker color. Wait a full day before reapplying. I go every other day, or sometimes every third day so I look natural. I have not experienced any kind of ”cheese doodle orange” look that we all strive to avoid. The tan looks so natural, my fiance even commented that I have a great tan. When I told him it was from a bottle, he was shocked. This kind of natural looking tan CAN come from a bottle!
Doesn’t smell like a garage
Instant satisfaction with the color
Takes awhile to dry
Can be a long process to apply
Recommend this? Absolutely! It’s cheap, and the color it gives is natural and streak free. If you’re looking for a drugstore self-tanner that gives you same day results without looking like a Dorito, this is for you!
